You Left An Indelible Mark As Education Minister; UPSA Praises NAPO As 5,000-Bed New Hostel Is Named After Him
The University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), has honoured the New Patriotic Party (NPP) vice presidential candidate, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh with the naming of a newly constructed hostel after him.
At a ceremony at the UPSA campus on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, Dr Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as Napo was recognized for his tremendous contributions to the development of education in the country.
He was particularly recognized for his visionary leadership during his tenure as Minister for Education, especially the way he supported infrastructure development in tertiary institutions.
The 5,000 bed hostel will go a long way in addressing accommodation challenges on campus.
The naming of the hostel after Dr Opoku Prempeh comes after the same university conferred an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters on him degree in July 2021 for his sterling leadership and dedication to advancing education in Ghana.
Napo praised
Addressing the ceremony, both the Chairman of the UPSA Council, Dr Kofi Ohene Konadu, and the Vice Chancellor, Professor Abednego Feehi Okoe Amartey, extolled the virtues of Dr Opoku Prempeh as Education Minister.
“Your support for this project was not just about funding but ensuring that tertiary institutions like UPSA could meet the growing demand for quality education,” Dr Konadu stated.
He mention in particular, Dr Opoku Prempeh’s role in facilitating the funding and construction of the state-of-the-art facility.
Legacy
Professor Amartey said, “Dr Opoku Prempeh’s impact on Ghana’s education is indelible. From the implementation of the Free Senior High School policy to enhancing the infrastructure of institutions like ours, his leadership continues to transform lives. Naming this hostel after him is our way of immortalizing his contributions.”
Gratitude
Accepting the honour done to him, Dr Opoku Prempeh expressed gratitude to UPSA saying, “This honour is not just mine but for all who believe in the power of education to transform lives. I remain committed to supporting the growth of institutions like UPSA, which are pivotal to our national development.”
He added: “This hostel, now bearing my name should serve as a symbol of what is possible when hard work and determination converge. It is my fervent prayer that, this hostel facility serve not only as home for its residents but also a source of inspiration for all who pass through its doors,” he added.
Supporting Bawumia
He reiterated his resolve to serve and support, God willing, the next President of the Republic, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, to make the neccessary difference in the lives of the people we serve.
