Take Up Challenge To Debate Bawumia — Prof. Etse Sikanku To John Mahama

A senior lecturer at the University of Media, Arts, and Communications (UniMaC) Prof. Etse Sikanku, has urged former President John Dramani Mahama to avail himself of the challenge for a presidential debate.

His call comes after Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP flagbearer criticized Mr Mahama, who is the NDC flagbearer, for running away from a debate.

Campaigning in the north recently, Dr Bawumia said, “I am looking forward to a debate with John Mahama on the economy, but I am afraid that he is running away from a debate. I have never heard of an opposition leader who doesn’t want to debate, but he knows I will expose the emptiness of his policies.”

Democracy
Speaking on the development, Prof. Sikanku stated on Channel One TV’s Citiuation Room, that presidential debate ahead of the December polls, enhances Ghana’s democracy. He highlighted the benefits of the debate, explaining that it provides a platform for the youth to learn about democracy and access critical information.

He stressed that debates increase political information and efficacy, and believes that debates offer an opportunity for young people to be introduced to democracy. “I believe that as we grow our democracy, we should seek to increase the political information, and efficacy in the debate system, there’s no such thing as too much information. I think that it will be a beautiful thing that a lot of young people will use this opportunity to learn.

“This probably becomes one of the opportunities for them to get baptised or introduced to what democracy is for people in Junior High Schools and Senior High Schools. So I think it further enhances our democracy,” he said.
