ECG has improved operational efficiency – Managing Director

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) is positioning itself to become efficient like a 21st-century company, the Managing Director of the company, Samuel Dubik Mahama has said.

“We are in a phase where we are turning our operational mechanisms to become efficient like a 21st-century utility company and our dynamism in digitalising the whole system,” he said.

Revenue
Speaking on Citi News on Saturday, July 1, 2023, he posited that the main goal of the company currently is to digitalise its operations in order to close the leakages to maximise revenue.
“That is what is going to close the gap quickly. I have said at every moment that I don’t believe in tariff increment, but I do believe that the tariff should be adjusted in terms of forex.”

ECG doing better
Mr Mahama pointed out that the ECG is now doing better than when it was under Power Distribution Services (PDS) Limited.
He, however, acknowledged that there are challenges that need to be resolved after which, if it continues to record losses, the privatisation conversation can fairly kick in.

Background
The Ministry of Energy has been very instrumental in the strides made by the ECG. Since he assumed office, the sector minister, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh has focused on supporting the company to be financially sound.
As a demonstration of that, the ministry contributed meaningfully to the retrieval of tariff arrears of over GH¢5.7 billion owed by power consumers.
