Meteo Agency offices locked up as workers begin strike

Offices at the Headquarters of the Ghana Meteorological Agency in Accra have been locked with no staff on duty following their ongoing strike.

The workers are expected to meet with the Ministry of Communications and Digitalization over their concerns later today, Friday.

In an interview with the media, Vice Chairman of the Divisional Union of the Ghana Meteorological Agency, Nana Kofi Opoku, said he was hopeful of fruitful negotiations.

“We are hoping that at the end of the meeting, something fruitful will come out,” he said.

Mr. Opoku noted that an earlier meeting with the Deputy Communications and Digitalization Minister, Ama Pomaah Boateng, was encouraging.

“We are hoping, by what she did yesterday [Thursday], I am believing that we will go into the meeting and come out successfully,” he said.

The Agency on Thursday asked all its members nationwide to lay down their tools to demand better conditions of service.

It cited the non-payment of certain allowances and poor infrastructure, among others, as the reasons for its strike.

“When you go to the various stations, the structures are in deplorable conditions and very terrible,” Mr. Opoku stressed.

The Ghana Meteorological Agency is responsible for providing information on weather situations on a daily basis.

It also keeps a meteorological watch over the Flight Information Region (FIR) for the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority.

The weather information provided by the agency is also used in a number of sectors including agriculture, industry, civil engineering, forestry, management of dams, tourism, among others.
