President Akufo-Addo attends ECOWAS Summit in Guinea-Bissau

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo joined his colleagues in the sub-region for the 63rd Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on Sunday , July 9, 2023, in Bissau, the capital of Guinea-Bissau.

The President who arrived in Bissau on Saturday accompanied by the Minister of National Security, Albert Kan Dapaah, and officials from the Presidency and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional integration, was expected back in the country later on Sunday.

Sub-regional issues
The Heads of State considered reports from the 19th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Council of Ministers meeting held from July 6 to 7, 2023, in Bissau and other issues affecting the region during their session.

The Summit addressed memoranda on pressing sub-regional issues including; Report of the 50th Ordinary Session of the Mediation and Security Council (MSC) covering security challenges faced by the member countries; Report of the 90th Ordinary Session of ECOWAS Council of Ministers on the financial situation of the body and the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), as well as report on the status of transition in the Republics of Mali, Burkina Faso and Guinea.

Tinubu leads ECOWAS
Meanwhile , President of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been chosen as the next chairman of ECOWAS.
The choice was made on Sunday at the Bissau Summit.
Bayo Onanuga, the president’s communications advisor, made this known in a tweet on his official account on Sunday.

The tweet read: “Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will become the new ECOWAS chairman today, succeeding President Umaro Embalo of Guinea Bissau, who became chairman 4 July 2022, at the 61st summit in Accra.”
