Police seize firearms, ammunition, and excavators in major anti-galamsey raid

A joint anti-galamsey operation conducted by the Mankranso District Police Command and the Ahafo Ano South West District Assembly on Monday, June 2, 2025, led to the seizure of several firearms, rounds of ammunition, and five excavators.
The exercise targeted illegal mining activities in the Mpasaaso and Achiase areas as part of ongoing efforts to combat the environmental and security threats posed by illegal small-scale mining.
During the operation, several individuals engaged in the unauthorised mining activities fled the scene upon noticing the presence of the security team. In their haste, they abandoned various items and heavy equipment used in the operations.
A search and inspection of the mining sites led to the seizure of the following:
– One (1) CAL 9mm pistol loaded with three (3) rounds of live ammunition
-Four pump-action guns
– Twelve live BB cartridges
-Five live AA cartridges
-Five excavators
Authorities say the confiscated equipment and weapons are being kept as evidence, while investigations continue to apprehend the fleeing miners and dismantle the illegal mining networks in the area.
The police, in a statement dated June 4, said, “The firearms and ammunition are being kept at the Mankranso District Police Command for further investigation. The Regional Police Command wishes to commend all officers and stakeholders involved in this successful operation.”
The police called on the public to support law enforcement by providing credible information that will lead to an arrest and prosecution.
“We urge the general public to support law enforcement by providing credible information that will lead to the arrest and prosecution of persons involved in these illegal mining activities,” the police stated.
