Police Forward NDC Awutu Senya East Parliamentary Candidate Gun Case to Attorney-General For Advice

The police have forwarded the case docket involving the NDC parliamentary candidate for Awutu Senya East, Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor to the Attorney-General for study and advice.

Naa Koryoo was arrested on Friday, May 7, 2024, and detained overnight at the Cantonments Police Station in Accra before she was released on Saturday.

Police said her arrest was in connection with a gun which was found in her vehicle on Sunday June 2, 2024 at the Electoral Commission office in the constituency, during the vote transfer exercise.

Bail
In a statement, the police said, “Suspect, Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor has been cautioned on the offence of transfer of firearms without authority whilst suspects Abdulai Aziz and Mustapha Mohammed have been cautioned on the offence of possession of firearms without authority.”

They were subsequently granted bail by the police while investigations continue.

Remand
On Thursday, June 6, 2024, a court remanded into police custody, Usman Haruna for stabbing one person during the disturbances at the office of the Electoral Commission at Ofaakor in the Awutu Senya East constituency.

Police denial
Meanwhile, police have denied an allegation by NDC National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia that the Accra Regional Police Commander, the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and the Inspector-General of Police had indicated to him that the arrest of some three persons for possession of firearms at Ofaakor in the Awutu Senya East Constituency was based on an order from above.

“We would like to categorically state that the claims are false and without any bases. None of the officers mentioned in the video has at any point in time made any such pronouncement.

“We wish to emphasize that all three suspects were arrested when a Pump Action gun with four rounds of ammunition was found in their vehicle at the offices of the Electoral Commission at Ofaakor in the Awutu Senya East constituency of the Central region. They have subsequently been cautioned and granted bail,” police said in another statement.
