Outstanding Dr. Opoku Prempeh to be honoured by UCC
The University of Cape Coast (UCC) will on Saturday, July 29, 2023, confer an honorary doctorate degree on the Minister of Energy, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh at a special congregation.
A flyer posted by the UCC on social media explained that Dr. Opoku Prempeh is being honoured for his “outstanding leadership and distinguished service during his time as Minister of Education”.
The ceremony will take place at the New Examination Centre of the UCC at 10 am. It will be the 3rd honorary doctorate to be conferred on Dr. Opoku Prempeh for the effective manner he handled matters relating to education when he headed the sector.

Giving further details, the University Relations Officer (URO), Major (Rtd.) Kofi Baah-Bentum, told The Thunder on Tuesday, July 25, 2023, that Saturday’s event will also feature six other honorees for their contributions to education and other societal developments.
They are a former Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), Dr K.K. Sarpong; the Paramount Chief of the Assin Owirenkyi Traditional Area (Assin Kushea), Ehunabobrim Prah Agyensaim VI; the CEO of Danadams Pharmaceuticals Limited, Dr Yaw Adu-Gyamfi; a US based chronic disease epidemiologist who did a research work at the UCC, Dr. Deborah Rose; a Ghanaian-American president of Millersville University of Pennsylvania, Prof. Daniel Asua Wubah, and a Physician and Clinical Neuroanatomist, Prof. Harold Stewart Amonoo-Kuofi.
“The university looked at the contributions the individuals have made to the development of their areas of endeavour,” Major Baah-Bentum stated.
Dr. Opoku Prempeh proved worth
For Dr. Opoku Prempeh who is also the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Manhyia South, the URO said, he proved his worth as the Minister of Education during the first term of the Akufo-Addo government.
He said worthy of note was that Dr. Opoku-Prempeh supervised the successful birth and early progress of the free SHS program.
Other Honorary Doctorate
On May 26, 2021, the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) conferred an honorary doctorate degree on Dr. Opoku Prempeh for his bold commitment to spearheading reforms in the educational sector.
“Key government achievements in the educational sector such as the flagship Free SHS, the introduction of the Double Track System, and free meals for first cycle institutions have all been successfully implemented during his tenure as the sector minister,” the university stated.
And in July 2021, the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) conferred on him an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters (DHL) for his significant contributions to the promotion of quality education in the country.
