Otumfuo Was Close to Peace Deal in Bawku Before Fresh Violence Erupted — President Mahama Reveals

President John Dramani Mahama has announced that Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II was close to finalizing the settlement of the Bawku dispute before the recent violence erupted.
He stated that the Asantehene is actively leading mediation efforts to bring an end to the long-standing conflict between the Kusasis and Mamprusis in Bawku, and has been providing regular updates that indicate significant progress toward resolution.
“He has consistently briefed me on the mediation efforts, and we are almost there,” President Mahama remarked. He shared these insights during a courtesy call from the Overlord of Gonjaland, Yagbonwura Bii-Kunutu Jewu Soale I, at the Jubilee House in Accra on Tuesday, July 29.
Sabotage
Expressing his concerns, the President noted that the recent violent incidents appear to be calculated attempts by certain individuals to undermine the peace process.
“The current fighting and killings can only be orchestrated by those who wish to derail the mediation efforts,” he emphasized while calling for peace.
Impact
President Mahama voiced deep concern about the conflict’s impact on education and public service delivery in Bawku.
“We cannot accept the current situation where students are shot in school and killed. We cannot accept the current situation where teachers, public officers have all run away from Bawku because they are afraid for their lives,” he stated.
