Otumfuo is working actively to bring peace to Bawku – National Peace Council
The Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II is actively working to help bring peace to Bawku, the National Peace Council has stated. “The Otumfuo committee is actively working. The Inter-Ethnic committee is also working and we hope that given a little bit more time, there might be some way to resolve the conflict,” the Chairman of the Council, Rev. Dr. Ernest Adu Gyamfi said.
Speaking on Joy FM, Dr Adu Gyamfi called on the public to support the security personnel rather than subject them to scrutiny, adding that this would give them the motivation to give their best in addressing the conflict.
Appeal
Recent attacks related to the conflict have resulted in the killing of about 10 people. Following the surge in the disturbances , the Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga has appealed to the Asantehene to do everything within his power to bring a lasting solution to the Bawku conflict.
He said he has every confidence in Otumfu to use his wisdom to save Bawku from the killing and destruction it is experiencing .
Engagement
Speaking on the issue, Rev. Dr. Adu Gyamfi assured Ghanaians of the Peace Council’s continuous commitment to address and possibly end the Bawku conflict.
He said although the Bawku conflict has resurfaced, there has been a lot of engagement to ensure that it is resolved. “The situation is becoming much more difficult but on our part, we have not given up, “he stated.
Support
Stressing on the need for support for the security agencies, he said, “We need to support the military and the police to bring stability to the area. Sometimes, I think that an attack on the military and the police is wrong because if we lose them, then we don’t have anybody there to help us.”
Background
In June , 2023, Otumfuo announced that he has initiated processes to help end the Bawku chieftaincy dispute.
“I am still on the Bawku issue, I have called all factions separately. In peace and truth, we will all sit and listen to the issues. Both factions will be allowed to speak out so we solve the issues.”
“Already, I have spoken to the leaders of the factions and other relevant persons. Some have submitted documents to be studied so we will look into all of that. We will all sit in one room and solve the issues. I have asked them to lay down their guns, “ he said.
