Otumfuo celebrates Awukudae in London, Urges Asantes in UK to live in peace
Hundreds of Asantes in the United Kingdom and other well-wishers on Wednesday joined the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to celebrate Awukudae at his residence in London.
Otumfuo who left Ghana a couple of days ago to attend the St Andrews Africa Summit (SAASUM) in Scotland on Saturday, September 16, 2023, continued to London for some private engagements.
But, that would not stop him from observing one of the sacred events on the Asante traditional calendar.
Awukudae, an important festival on the Asante traditional calendar, is celebrated on Wednesdays nine times in a year in 42-day intervals.
Homage
The celebrants, many in their rich kente outfits , were excited to join the King for the celebration. Surrounded by some of his chiefs who travelled with him including the Juabenhene , Nana Otuo Siriboe II, His Majesty sat in state for his subjects to pay homage to him.
One after the other they either bowed before the King, or shook hands with him. Some of them presented gifts, including drinks to the Asantehene to show their appreciation for the many great things he had done for Asanteman and Ghana.
Blessings
Speaking through his linguist, Baffour Osei Kwame Kantankrakyi, the Asantehene said he was delighted to see his people in good health and working hard to make a better living for themselves and their families.
He said Otumfuo is looking at how Asantes in the UK and other foreign lands would continue to live and work in peace. “Otumfuo came with his blessings to his people here, and he is happy to see you doing fine,“ he said.
