Obuasi Substation Fire Causes Widespread Power Outage in Ashanti Region

Residents of Obuasi and nearby communities were plunged into darkness on Wednesday evening following a fire outbreak at the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo)’s Obuasi Substation in the Ashanti Region.
The incident, which occurred at 9:12 pm on 21 May, led to an immediate power outage as GRIDCo officials shut down supply to ensure public safety.
According to a statement issued by Dzifa Bampoh, Manager of Corporate Communications at GRIDCo, the fire was swiftly contained with assistance from fire personnel of AngloGold Ashanti, who responded promptly to the emergency.
“Our team of engineers are currently conducting thorough checks to assess the integrity of equipment at the station,” the statement noted. “This is a necessary step before we can safely restore power to affected customers.”
GRIDCo apologised for the inconvenience caused and assured residents that all efforts are being made to restore power supply as soon as possible.
Investigations into the cause of the fire are yet to be disclosed.
