Napo inaugurates Keta, Anloga assemblies; Urges synergy between assembly members and local structures

Energy Minister, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh has called for a proper synergy between assembly members and the local structures. “This is a measure which in the view of the President is aimed at realizing and optimizing the ideals of local governance,” he said.

Dr Opoku Prempeh popularly known as Napo, made the call when he, on behalf of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, inaugurated the Keta Municipal and Anloga District Assemblies in the Volta Region on Monday, February 12, 2024.

Law
The inauguration of the assemblies was in fulfilment of Article 35 Clause 6(d) of the constitution, which enjoins the state to promote decentralisation and popular participation in governance. Section 6 of the Local Governance Act 2016(Act 936) as amended by Act 940, provides that District Level Elections should be held every four years with an interval between it and the Presidential and Parliamentary elections being at least six months apart.

Commitment
The Minister said the government remains committed to ensuring the existence of robust local governance structures which affords the citizenry the opportunity to be part and parcel of the decision-making process at all levels.

Mandate
Dr Opoku Prempeh reminded the assembly members of their mandate to deliberate, plan, mobilize resources, and make by-laws, with the aim of promoting decentralization and popular participation in governance. “I convey the warm congratulations of the President to all of you on your success at the polls in December last year,” he told them.
