Mahama Solicits Russia Support For Elections 2024
Reports have emerged of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) allegedly receiving campaign funding from Russia.
The allegation has been bolstered by NDC flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama’s presence in Moscow this week.
The former President’s Russia move has raised questions about what his real intentions were.
Under the guise of the launch of the Russian language translation of his book, “My First Coup D’etat and Other Stories from the Lost Decades of Africa”, some reports alleged that the former President was in Russia for aid for his 2024 election journey.
In his company was the MP for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.
Returns
It is not known what Russia hopes to get in return from the alleged aid to Mahama. But, coming at a time that Putin is seeking to expand Russia’s influence in Africa through various means, including the provision of security assistance, weapons sales and information operations, and influencing elections, a lot more questions call for answers.

Photos shared on his Facebook page on Thursday, July 11, 2024, show Mahama at the Russian Academy of Sciences in Woscow, in what he described as “an incredible milestone.”
Historically, Mahama has links with Russia having studied at the Institute of Social Sciences in Moscow during the era of Gorbachev and Perestroika.
Relations
Indeed, Mahama left no secret about the NDC’s relations with Russia, and paid tribute to the Russian government for the age-old relations between Russia and the NDC. “The NDC and Russia have been allies since our formation, your support for me and the NDC in the 2024 election will be a major boost for socialist movements across the globe” Mahama reportedly stated in Moscow.
Security implications
A Russia entry into Ghana’s politics poses danger to the security of the nation. A concerned Ghanaian called on the Ghana government to seriously monitor the moves of the former President since his actions have security implications for Ghana.
