Mahama Ayariga appeals to Otumfuo to help end Bawku conflict
The Member of Parliament (MP) for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga has appealed to the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to do everything within his power to bring a lasting solution to the Bawku conflict.
He said he has every confidence in the Asantehene to use his wisdom to save Bawku from furtner bloodshed.
Latest shooting
His call comes after a latest shooting incident in Bawku which has claimed two lives and four others sustaining injuries.
According to police sources, the incident occurred around Zongo near the Bawku Police Station at 12:30 pm on Wednesday.
Otumfuo’s engagement
Last year, the Asantehene announced that he has initiated steps to help resolve the prolonged conflict in Bawku.
“I have had meetings with the National Security Minister to see how best I can be of help. I will speak to the Paramount Chief of the Mamprugu people and the Bawku Na ba to find a way to resolve this. I feel that what is happening in Burkina Faso is porous, and if we are not careful, the porosity of the border will come back to Ghana. We do not have the ability to check what is happening. That is why I’m asking the National Security Minister to give proper intelligence training to control the borders with all the terrorist attacks threats,” Otumfuo stated.
However, the process seemed to have slowed down, as many people continue to lose their lives through gun attacks.
Appeal
Speaking to the media on Thursday, January 18, 2024, Mr Ayariga said the government action of sending more troops to Bawku is not the solution to the problem.
He questioned whether the government is giving the Asantehene the needed support to resolve the matter.
“I don’t know if they are giving him the right support,” he stated.
The MP asked the two traditional rulers in the conflict to give the Asantehene the needed support when he engages them.
