Kumasi Ayɛ Hu: Security on High Elert After Back-to-Back Killings Tied to Bawku Conflict Spillover

Security has been heightened in Asawase and nearby areas of Kumasi following the recent killings of two men connected to the Bawku conflict.

The Ashanti Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has implemented enhanced measures to address the situation.

Recent attacks
On July 22, Abdul-Malik Azenbe, the Kusasi chief in the Ashanti Region, was shot dead by unknown assailants in front of his home. Just three days later, on July 25, another man was gunned down in the same area.

Preventive measures
To prevent the Bawku conflict from spilling over into Kumasi—home to a large Kusasi and Mamprusi population—REGSEC swiftly introduced security measures for the affected zones. Additionally, the Manhyia Palace, located near Asawase, is now under 24-hour security patrols.

Latest security measures
After initial steps announced on July 24, REGSEC convened again on Sunday to assess the situation and issued new directives with immediate effect to further strengthen security and ensure residents’ safety.
