KMA Endorses Zoomlion’s Plan to Revolutionize Waste Management in Kumasi

The Environment sub-committee of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has expressed optimism about the potential of Zoomlion Ghana Limited’s self-loading tricycles, skip compactor trucks, and skip containers to revolutionise waste management in the Greater Kumasi area.

Following a field visit to various subsidiaries of Zoomlion where the equipment is currently being assembled, Committee Chairman Abraham Boadi highlighted the significant impact the integration of skip tricycles could have on Kumasi’s waste management system.

“We plan to engage with the General Assembly to ensure this initiative is properly implemented,” Mr. Boadi said. “With five sub-metros in the Ashanti Region, allocating this equipment across each of them would be highly beneficial.”

He made the remarks after leading a 14-member delegation from the KMA Environment Sub-Committee to inspect ongoing logistics preparations by Zoomlion aimed at enhancing waste management across the Kumasi Metropolis and the Ashanti Region.

The team visited three key assembly sites: the JSA Logistics Warehouse in Tema, JA Plant Pool, and the Accra Compost and Recycling Plant (ACARP) in Adjen Kotoku, Accra.

Mr. Boadi expressed hope for a strong and sustained collaboration between the Assembly and Zoomlion to effectively tackle the region’s sanitation challenges.

Also part of the delegation was Metro Environmental Health Officer and Secretary to the Environment Sub-Committee, Kwaku Poku, who described the visit as enlightening.

“What we’ve seen here today is truly encouraging,” Mr. Poku said. “Visiting and seeing the equipment firsthand has opened our eyes to the potential impact this initiative can have on waste management in the Kumasi Metropolis.”

He noted that the equipment—particularly the self-loading tricycles—are ideal for areas that are inaccessible to larger waste trucks, such as congested markets and densely populated communities.

“This trip has been very fruitful. I believe these logistics can significantly contribute to our efforts to tackle the waste crisis, especially in Kumasi,” Mr. Poku added.

Senior Public Health Engineer with the KMA Waste Management Department, Wiafe Akenten Oduro, also praised Zoomlion for its commitment and investment in the sector.

He noted that the company’s innovations have not only improved waste management across the country but have also created substantial employment opportunities for Ghanaians.

“Without their various initiatives, many people might still be without jobs. Their commitment to improving our national waste management system is commendable, and we fully support their efforts,” Mr. Oduro said.

He concluded by calling on all Ghanaians to play an active role in keeping their surroundings clean. “Waste management is a shared responsibility, and we all have a part to play in maintaining a healthy environment,” he stressed.
