Kennedy Agyapong donates GHC1 million to NPP

The former Member of Parliament for Assin Central Kennedy Agyapong has donated GHC1 million to the New Patriotic Party to help settle outstanding salaries and arrears owed to party workers.

Speaking at the NPP headquarters, Agyapong explained that he felt compelled to assist after hearing media reports about the party’s financial struggles just a few months after the leadership changes that preceded the December 2024 election.

“It comes with challenges. It is not only NPP; it is every party – when they go to opposition, they face financial or resource challenges,” he said.

“So I came from Madagascar and I heard in the news that we’ve not been able to pay salaries and monies to workers. So I decided to come with my widow’s mite and contribution to help run the administration.”

The outspoken businessman and politician emphasised that the party’s inability to meet basic obligations such as paying staff was unacceptable, especially at such an early stage in its reorganisation.

“It is sad that we just came into opposition four months ago and we cannot run the party – which I think is not good enough,” he declared. “So, my message is simple: I have come this morning with my widow’s mite as a contribution to enable you to run the party.”

Kennedy Agyapong, who placed second in the NPP’s 2023 presidential primaries, is widely respected in the party for his generosity and his blunt political commentary.

His gesture is expected to provide temporary relief for the party, which faces further administrative challenges as it prepares for the 2028 general election.
