John Mahama leads NDC in election 2024; Wins big in primary, 17 MPs fall
Former President, John Dramani Mahama, will lead the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2024 general elections , the fourth time running.
This was after he secured an overwhelming victory in the party’s presidential primary last Saturday. He polled 297,603 votes representing 98.9 per cent of the valid votes cast to beat his contender , Kojo Bonsu, a former Mayor of Kumasi who polled just 3,181 votes representing 1.1 per cent.
A third aspirant, Dr Kwabena Duffuor, a former Minister of Finance, pulled out of the race on the eve of the elections, citing irregularities in the voters register. But there were heavy casualties in the parliamentary primaries where 17 incumbent Members of Parliament (MPs) fell.
Kojo Bonsu concedes
Mr Bonsu conceded defeat and congratulated the former President hours before the Director of Electoral Services at the Electoral Commission (EC), Dr Serebour Quiacoe announced the results in the early hours of Sunday at the NDC headquarters in Accra.
Taking to Facebook, he stated; “ I saw our former President John Dramani Mahama and his team work so hard every day than never before to achieve this accomplishment, and I can’t think of anyone who deserves it more than him at this moment. You set an amazing example for the NDC.”
Unity
In a victory speech posted on social media, Mr Mahama urged all party members to remain united to ensure and work towards winning the 2024 general elections.
“I also ask for cooperation among all our elected parliamentary candidates and the respective aspirants and supporters and all the constituencies across the country,” he added,
Party is winner
Mr Mahama said the victory is for the party and not any individual. “ Our party is the winner because there are no individual winners and losers in the party’s contest, ” he said
Nevertheless, he thanked his campaign team for keeping their focus and delivering a clean campaign.
MPs who lost
The 17 MPs who failed to retain their tickets are Dr Kwabena Donkor, Pru East; Alhaji ABA Fuseini, Sagnarigu; Thomas Dalu, Chiana-Paga; Samson Tangombu Chiragia, Navrongo Central; Edward Bawa, Bongo; Alex Adomako , Sekyere Afram Plains; Wisdom Gidisu, Krachie East, and Abeiku Crentsil, Ekumfi.
The rest are Albert Akuka Alalzuuga, Garu; Della Sowah, Kpando; Augustine Tawia, Bia West; Angela Oforiwa Alorwu-Tay, Afadjato South; Peter Yaw Kwakye Ackah, Amenfi Central; Christian Otuteye – Sege; Kwabena Woyome, South Tongu; Kwadwo Nyanpon Aboagye, Biakoye, and Sophia Ackuaku, current MP for Domeabra-Obom but switched to Ayawaso Central.
Victories
Some incumbent MPs who secured their tickets to contest the 2024 elections are Samuel Nartey George, Ningo Prampram; Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak, Asawase; Dr Dominic Akurintinga Ayine, Bolgatanga East; Mahama Ayariga, Bawku Central; Ernest Norgbey, Ashaiman; Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, Korley Klottey; Kofi Adams , Buem James Agalga , Builsa North, and Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, Krowor.
New entrants included a former Medical Director of the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, Dr Thomas Winsum Anaba, Garu; Abdullai Abu Sadiq, Okaikoi Central ; Hajia Aftah Nasira, Sekyere Afram Plains; Felix Kwakye Ofosu – Abura Asebu Kwamankese.
