‘I would be perfect for Special Prosecutor, but not now’ – Martin Kpebu

Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has stated that he would reject any offer to serve as Special Prosecutor (SP), despite acknowledging that he would be a “perfect fit” for the role.
He argued that accepting the position amid the ongoing tension with Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng could create the perception that he orchestrated Agyebeng’s removal to pursue the office for himself.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosiisen on Thursday, December 4, 2025, Kpebu said, “Ideally, if not because of the fight between Kissi Agyebeng and me, I would have gladly accepted to be the SP, but people would think I asked for his removal so that I can take charge.”
He added, “I would have been a perfect fit for the position if the president thought so and Ghanaians agreed.”
Kpebu’s remarks follow his release from custody after being detained for obstructing an officer of the Special Prosecutor’s Office (OSP). The incident has further strained relations between him and the OSP.
The lawyer has previously criticised the Special Prosecutor’s handling of investigations, particularly the delegation of inquiries to junior officers who report directly to Mr. Agyebeng. He has maintained that only an independently constituted committee can fairly examine the allegations he has raised.
Kpebu has also questioned the OSP’s management of other high-profile cases, including the investigation involving former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, claiming that key procedural steps were not properly executed.
