I dream that one day a woman will become President – First Lady
First Lady, Rebecca Akufo-Addo, has said it is her dream to see a woman become President in her the near future.
Speaking at the 5th session of the 15th Congregation of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) yesterday (Tuesday, December 12, 2024), the First Lady,who received an honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters , said women’s contributions to national development has been excellent.
Accepting the honour, she expressed the hope that more women would make it to the top of their careers.
Emphasizing the recognition given her by the university, she prayed that in the near-future a woman will hold the highest honour of being the President.
“Like Martin Luther King, I also have a dream. I dream that one day there will be a woman president in Ghana. And the title Madam President will be as easy as Mr. President,” she said.
Hails husband
She was full of praise for her husband, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo , who was present at the ceremony, for his unwavering support for her endeavours.
“It has been quite a journey with its challenges and triumphs. Through it all, my dear husband the President, His Excellency Nana Akufo-Addo has been my rock and greatest cheerleader. His mentorship and insightful suggestions have presented me with opportunities to learn and grow.
“My success is his success as well. I am truly grateful to my husband.”
She added that all that she had been concerned about with her philanthropy was how to improve the daily lives of people in the country, particularly women and children.
Making difference
The First Lady said it had been her determination to make a difference in the lives of those who needed assistance.
She dedicated her honorary doctorate to the women and children of Ghana whose resilience, she said continue to inspire her.
Other honorary doctorate degree recipients were a former Chief Justice, Justice Georgina Theodora Wood and a former Speaker of Parliament, Justice Joyce Bamford Addo.
