GRNMA threatens to resume strike over delayed agreement implementation
The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has expressed strong disappointment in the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health for what it describes as a breach of an agreed roadmap aimed at resolving outstanding issues related to the implementation of revised conditions of service.
This follows the association’s decision to suspend its nationwide strike earlier this month, based on assurances from the Committee that concrete steps would be taken to implement four key items in the agreement.
However, GRNMA says the Health Committee has unilaterally rescheduled a crucial meeting initially planned for June 26 to July 10, 2025, citing the absence of some key stakeholders currently outside the country’s jurisdiction. The Association views the rescheduling as a lack of urgency in addressing their long-standing concerns.
Addressing a press conference in Accra on Thursday, June 26, the President of GRNMA, Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo, criticised the development and urged the government to show greater respect for the nursing and midwifery profession.
She indicated that the revised collective agreement must be fully implemented no later than the end of July 2025, warning that failure to meet the agreed timeline in good faith could compel the Association to resume industrial action.
“The rescheduling of the meeting in our view is in bad faith, since it may further delay the implementation of the agreed items. We have, however, decided to give the committee the benefit of the doubt and still trust that their engagement with the ministries of health and finance would be productive.
“We demand the implementation of the four agreed-upon items not later than July 2025. This is non-negotiable, and we shall advise ourselves if any attempt is made to further delay the implementation,” she said.
