A gang of dare-devil robbers have been smoked out of their hideout; a private armoury well stocked with all manner of offensive weapons at the town of Ntoaso in the Eastern Region in a life-or-death operation carried out by the Ghana Police Service.

During the operation, the robbers opened fire on the policemen and blew off the fingers of one officer. He is currently on admission at the Police Hospital awaiting surgery.

Even after the robbers had been over powered and were being transported to the Police Headquarters in Accra, in the police vehicles driving at top speed with sirens screaming, one of the robbers attempted to snatch the loaded gun of a police officer in the vehicle ostensibly to open fire as an avenue of escape.

Two of the suspected robbers were gunned down in the operation. Their lifeless bodies are at the morgue.

The weapons have been taken over by the Ghana Police and retained for further investigation.

The retrieved weapons include 2,882 Rounds of 7.62 x 39mm (AK 47 Ammo), 840 Rounds of 5.56 x 45mm (M 16 Ammo), 23 Rounds of BB Cartridges, one M 16 Rifle, one AK 47 Assault Rifle, one Pump Action Gun, one Pistol (locally manufactured) and one Short Gun.

Also retrieved from the hideout of the robbers were one Military Camouflage Uniform, 7 machetes, 5 knives, one sword and one claw-bar.
There was also a traditional warrior smock and an assortment of other personal items.

Surprisingly, no dry leaves suspected to be marihuana was found.

OPERATION

The successful operation was jointly carried out by the National Operations Directorate (NOD), the Surveillance Unit and three other Combat Patrol Teams all under the Ghana Police Service as part of security measures adopted by the Police Administration under the new Anti-Armed Robbery Task Force (AARTF) strategy to curb robberies and other violent crimes in the country.

The Police Service has said that they picked information from a source that some arms and ammunitions had been concealed by a gang of Armed Robbers at Ntoaso, a town in the Eastern Region.

In response to the Intelligence gathered, a team from the National Operations Directorate (NOD) Surveillance Unit and three other Combat Patrol Teams were dispatched to the location to retrieve the said weapons.

On reaching the location, the suspected robbers took to their heels on seeing the Police.

The police team then began to search and retrieve the weapons but unknown to them, one of the suspected robbers who was hiding in a nearby room opened fire on the Police and hit the hand of one of the officers, injuring his two fingers in the process.

The Police responded with rapid fire and gunned down the suspected robber on the offensive while one other was subdued and arrested.

The team continued the search and retrieved all weapons that had been stocked there.

Additional information gathered indicates that while the Police team was on its way back to the National Police Headquarters in Accra, the other suspected robber attempted to snatch the weapon of one of the operational men and was gunned down in the struggle.

The two lifeless bodies of the suspected robbers have been deposited at the Police Hospital for preservation and further action while a man haunt for the escaped robbers is underway.
