Ghana focused on national nuclear roadmap – Energy Minister

Construction of Ghana’s first Nuclear Power Plant, which is the Phase 3 of the nuclear agenda, will commence in accordance with the national nuclear roadmap, Energy Minister, Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh has said.

The move, he explained , is to enable the country meet its energy demand as well as meet the carbon emission mitigation targets.

He said this in a keynote speech delivered on Wednesday, November 1, 2023 at the US-Africa Nuclear Summit in Accra.

Backbone

The Minister said production of adequate electrical power, through clean baseload technology, such as nuclear will serve as a strong backbone for the West African Power Pool (WAPP).

Dinner

Later, Dr Opoku Prempeh joined President Akufo-Addo for a dinner gala of the International Framework for Nuclear Energy Cooperation (IFNEC) which climaxed the summit.
He was hopeful that the summit has further deepened the bond of co-operation between Ghana and the USA.

The summit

The Summit is the first-ever Pan-African event organized by the United States, focused on the future of nuclear power on the continent.
This event provided a distinguished platform for US officials including those from government, academia, industry, and national laboratories; as well as other ministers, leaders, policymakers, and technical experts from across the continent to engage in critical dialogues on nuclear energy issues.

With a focus on fostering international cooperation, sharing innovative solutions, and shaping policies, the event served as a catalyst for positive change and as a platform to strengthen existing relationships and establish new ones to enhance cooperation in the nuclear energy sector.
