GFA Congress approves extension of presidential term limit to three terms

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has officially extended the presidential term limit from two to three terms, following a decisive vote at the 31st Ordinary Congress held in Pampram on Tuesday.
Out of 123 delegates who participated in the vote, 114 supported the amendment, six opposed it, and three abstained. This move alters the 2019 GFA statutes, which previously capped the presidency at two four-year terms.
The extension means the current GFA President, Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku, who has been in office since 2019, will be eligible to seek a third term when his current mandate ends in 2027.
The decision reflects a broader effort to provide continuity in leadership as the GFA undertakes various reforms aimed at professionalising and developing Ghanaian football at all levels.
Supporters argue that allowing a third term will enable ongoing projects and initiatives to reach completion without disruption. However, some critics express concern about the potential for power consolidation and reduced opportunities for leadership renewal.
The amendment now positions the GFA in line with several other football associations that permit presidents to serve three terms, balancing governance stability with democratic processes.
As the football community digests the change, attention turns to how this will impact the future trajectory of Ghana’s football administration.
