Experienced Dan Botwe, a strategic choice to lead Bawumia’s campaign to break the 8
The immediate past Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Dan Botwe is set to be named the manager of the Dr Mahamudu Bawumia campaign team.
The NPP flagbearer will be oudooring his campaign team for this year’s elections this week, and The Thunder has gathered that Mr Botwe, who is the MP for Okere will be the man to lead the charge.
The former NPP General Secretary will head a team which also has politically-savvy politicians like the Director General of the National Lotteries Authority (NLA), Sammi Awuku; former NPP General Secretary and former Presidential Spokesperson, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong; the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Inter City STC, Nana Akomea; former MP for Suhum, Frederick Opare Ansah; presidential staffer, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, and former National Youth Organiser of the NPP and former Member of Parliament for Lawra, Anthony Abayifaa Karbo.
It was further gathered that some women will be included in the campaign team.
Pedigree
Political watchers believe that Mr Botwe at the helm of the Bawumia team, will be a strategic move in the NPP’s quest to break the eight year election cycle between the NPP and NDC.
The NPP is determined to win this year’s general elections and has made “ break the 8” a battle cry.
Mr Botwe, a shrew politician in the NPP had been in the thick of affairs when it mattered most for the NPP. The 65-year-old who trained as computer scientist at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) played a key role in the victory of former President J.A. Kufuor in the crucial elections of 2000. He was the General Secretary of the NPP at the time.
He served as the Minister for Information under President Kufuor, and in January 2017, President Akufo-Addo named him the Minister for the newly created Ministry of Regional Reorganization and Development.
Declaration of support
An admirer of the brilliance and competence of Dr Bawumia as a politician and economist, Mr Botwe was among the Ministers who first declared their support for the Vice President in the run-up to the NPP presidential primaries.
On August 6, 2023, he charged the rank and file of the party to throw their weight behind Dr Bawumia and elect him as the next flagbearer.
Announcing his support for Dr. Bawumia, during the Vice President’s visit to the Okere Constituency, Mr Botwe said with his experience as a former General Secretary of the party, and having analysed all the aspirants and the current situation of the party and the country, the best person to lead the NPP into the future was Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
“Since we started this flagbearership campaign, I have not spoken. But today I will speak. I was elected General Secretary of the NPP 25 years ago. I have had experience working under several stalwarts of the Party. I know the NPP very well. I know very well all the 10 people contesting. But I am here at Okere saying this. That anyone who knows me knows that I speak the truth and you cannot influence me with anything,” Mr. Botwe said.
“I love all the aspirants, but I love the NPP more. My friends in the NPP, if we look at what is happening in Ghana and NPP now, we are looking into the future. Based on my knowledge of the Party and judging from what is happening, I want to say and ask all of you to go and vote for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia,” he said.
