Environmental sustainability must begin with education — Napo

Former Energy Minister, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has emphasized that environmental sustainability must start with education.

He stated, “Prioritizing mainstream science from an early age equips future generations to champion sustainable development.”

Delivering the keynote address at the Future of Science Communication Forum hosted by the Alliance for Science in Nairobi, Kenya, on Tuesday, February 25, Dr Opoku Prempeh, also known as Napo, challenged political leaders to prioritize sustainability across all sectors.

The two-day conference celebrated ten years of groundbreaking achievements in advancing science communication and advocacy worldwide.

In discussing Ghana, he remarked, “We need political champions to promote sustainability.” He also underscored the importance of citizens, businesses, and institutions in holding leaders accountable.

Dr Opoku Prempeh, who was the running mate for the NPP in the 2024 presidential elections, pointed out that political champions alone cannot drive change. “We must all demand sustainable policies, engage in green initiatives, and make responsible choices in our daily lives,” he urged.

Valuable
Describing the meeting as valuable, Dr Opoku Prempeh expressed hope that the discussions could significantly reposition the continent for a sustainable future. “I am excited to have been part of this engagement,” he said.

He highlighted that the sustainability challenge facing Africa requires urgent action to achieve economic growth, social equity, and environmental protection, ensuring that today’s progress does not compromise the quality of life for future generations.
