Energy Minister Pushes For More Gas Supply for Power Generation

Energy Minister, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh is pushing for more gas supply to Ghana to support power generation.

Consequently, he stressed the need for the operational efficacy of the West Africa Gas Pipeline (WAGP). The Minister said the quest for more gas supply remains his topmost priority as part of efforts of ensuring power stability for industrial and residential use for Ghanaians.

Meeting of Ministers
He made these assertions during a meeting of the Committee of Ministers (CoM) of the West Africa Gas Pipeline on Tuesday, April, 2, 2024 in Lome, Togo.

The CoM meeting was a gathering of the Energy Ministers of Benin, Ghana, Nigeria and Togo to discuss the technical, commercial and regulatory issues pertaining to the operations of the WAGP.

Meetings
The Minister used the opportunity to hold meetings with key stakeholders on Ghana’s quest for more gas for power generation. Dr Opoku Prempeh urged gas suppliers to improve their services to recipient countries.

The Minister’s call was backed by his colleague Ministers from Togo and Benin whose countries equally depend on Nigeria for gas supply for electricity generation.

Cost
He stated that the current cost of liquid fuel alternatives are unaffordable and plunges the WAGP countries into debt whenever gas supply is curtailed.

Collective approach
Dr Opoku Prempeh expressed delight that the participating ministers at the meeting agreed on the need for an all-hands on deck approach in terms of seamless gas supply to support the economic growth of their respective countries. “I remain optimistic that, through these productive engagements, we will surmount temporary challenges in the energy sector and forge ahead for a brighter future,” he stated.
