Democracy, though imperfect, remains the best governance model – Dr. Bawumia
Former Vice President of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has reaffirmed his belief in democracy as the most effective form of governance, despite its inherent flaws.
Speaking in Nigeria on Monday, January 27, 2025, Dr Bawumia emphasised the enduring value of democracy in guaranteeing individual liberties and rights.
He cited Winston S. Churchill’s famous observation: “Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the others,” underscoring the pragmatic superiority of democracy over other systems of governance.
“It’s not a perfect system, but it’s the best we’ve got,” he remarked, highlighting the importance of democracy in safeguarding freedoms and fostering checks and balances within governance structures.
Dr. Bawumia referenced findings from the 2023 Open Society Barometer report, which revealed that 92% of Nigerians consider it important to live in a democratically governed country. Additionally, 69% of Nigerians expressed a preference for democracy over other forms of governance.
“This should leave no doubt that democracy has been embraced by the Nigerian people,” Dr Bawumia stated, lauding the country’s commitment to democratic ideals despite existing challenges.
He called on Nigerians to strengthen their democratic institutions and practices, stressing that the desire for democratic governance provides a strong foundation for future progress.
“Let us strengthen democracy, for it is through robust democratic systems that we can achieve greater prosperity and political stability,” he urged, emphasizing the role of inclusive and participatory governance in fostering national development.
Dr. Bawumia’s remarks come at a time when many African nations, including Nigeria, are navigating challenges to democratic governance while striving to uphold the principles of liberty and accountability.
