Death Toll Rises To 9 In AngloGold Obuasi Mine Clash

The death toll in the last Saturday’s incident at AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi mine in the Ashanti Region, has hit 9.

The killings arose when illegal miners who breached the mine’s concession, clashed with soldiers stationed at the mine. Eight of the galamseyers were also injured and are receiving treatment in hospital at Obuasi.

On Monday, January 20, the Ashanti Regional Minister designate, Dr Frank Amoakohene visited the injured illegal miners at Obuasi, and also commiserated with the bereaved families.

Assurance
Dr Amoakohene gave an assurance that the government is commitment to reaching the truth behind the violence. “The security officers are expected to protect us. In cases where confrontations arise between them and residents, it is crucial to investigate and address the root causes.

“We don’t want any escalation or pockets of unrest. The President has assured that the investigation will be thorough, ensuring we don’t experience such painful losses again,” Dr Amoakohene stated.
