Court orders EC to collate and declare results in six constituencies

The General Jurisdiction 13 of the High Court, presided over by Justice Rev. Fr. Joseph Adu Owusu Agyemang, has issued a directive to the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana to collate and declare the election results for six constituencies.

The constituencies affected by this ruling are Ablekuma North, Nsawam Adoagyiri, Obuasi East, Ahafo Ano North, Tema Central and Dome Kwabenya.

In addition to the directive, the court made consequential orders for the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, to provide security to the Electoral Commission during the collation and declaration processes.

This move is intended to ensure a smooth and secure environment for the EC to execute the court’s order.

The ruling follows applications filed by Nana Owusu Akua Afriyie and other parliamentary candidates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) from the specified constituencies. Their legal action stemmed from disturbances that disrupted the collation exercises during the electoral process.

The case forms part of broader litigation initiated due to reported interruptions during collation exercises in 12 constituencies identified by the Electoral Commission itself.

The disturbances have led to delays and disputes in finalising results, prompting affected candidates to seek judicial intervention.

The court’s directive underscores the need for prompt action by the Electoral Commission to conclude the electoral processes in these constituencies. With the involvement of the police under the leadership of Dr. Dampare, the collation and declaration exercises are expected to proceed without further disruptions.

This ruling marks a critical step in resolving the impasse in the affected constituencies and ensuring the integrity of Ghana’s electoral process.
