High expectations as Otumfuo storms Bono Region tomorrow for Berekumhene’s funeral

There are high expectations in Berekum in the Bono Region as the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, is set to attend the funeral (doteyie) of the late Berekumhene, Daasebre Amankona Diawuo II, tomorrow, Thursday.

Some of the residents who spoke to the Thunder were excited about the coming of the 16th Asantehene, describing it as historic.

“Although we are mourning our Omanhene, we will give the King a rousing welcome, “ one resident told The Thunder.

Berekum is one of the towns in the Bono Region that owes allegiance to the Golden Stool.

Funeral underway 

The three -day funeral which started on Tuesday, November 21, 2023, will be crowned with the performance of traditional rites by the Asantehene.

His Majesty will be accompanied a large delegation including paramount chiefs, abrempong and courtiers.

Tradition

Per tradition, the Asantehene will be the last to enter the funeral grounds as well as the last to pay his respects, before internment commences.

This means, any other Omanhene who will come late after Otumfuo is seated will not be allowed to enter the funeral grounds of Nana Berekumhene neither would he be allowed to view the body of the late Omanhene after Otumfuo has gone there to perform the traditional rites.

Announcement

On Monday, November 13, 2023, the Asantehene announced that he would visit Berekum for the burial rites of the Omanhene.

Speaking through his linguist, Baffour Osei Kwame Kantankrakyi, at the Manhyia Palace he said the entire Kumasi chiefs will join the King for the funeral of the late Omanhene.

“Berekum is Otumfuo’s town, “ the linguist said, and added that His Majesty will be going there as custom and tradition demands .

Oath

In November 2013, Daasebre Amankona  Diawuo II swore the oath of allegiance to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi.

The late Omanhene, who was known in private life as Dr Leo Ofori, was a member of the Kontire division of the Asanteman Council.

He was a surgeon who last worked at the Sunyani Regional Hospital.
