Commonwealth Secretary-General Emphasizes Peace in Bangladesh Election Talks

Commonwealth Secretary-General Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey has engaged in discussions with major political parties in Bangladesh.
As she visits the country for four days ahead of the upcoming elections in February, Botchwey listened to the perspectives of various political party representatives.

She emphasized the importance of a peaceful, credible, and participatory election, as outlined in the Commonwealth Charter. “We will always stand by and support Bangladesh in its democratic journey,” she posted on her Facebook page following the meeting on Sunday.
Botchwey also met with the Chief Election Commissioner, Nasir Uddin, as preparations for the elections in Bangladesh ramp up.
The meeting took place at the Election Commission headquarters in Agargaon, Dhaka, on Sunday, according to EC spokesman Ruhul Amin Malik. Officials reported that her discussions included topics of mutual interest, such as cooperation on peace, stability, democratic processes, good governance, and economic development.
