Children’s Support Fund for Helicopter Crash Victims Reaches GH¢2.3 Million

The Children’s Support Fund, established by President John Dramani Mahama to secure the welfare of the children of victims of the August 6 military helicopter crash, has accrued a total of GHS 2,315,000.00.

This was disclosed in a statement by Dr. Valerie Sawyerr, Senior Presidential Advisor on Governmental Affairs and Coordinator of the Fund, who confirmed that the initiative is already receiving strong backing from corporate Ghana.

President Mahama announced the creation of the Fund on Friday, August 15, 2025, during the funeral service for the eight individuals who died in the helicopter crash.

The President emphasized that the Fund would provide long-term support to the children left behind, ensuring their education, welfare, and overall well-being.

Government expressed its appreciation to Stanbic Bank Ghana, which made an initial seed donation of GHS 500,000.00, as well as the following companies for their contributions to the Fund:

Sage Distribution Ltd

Quantum Oil Terminals

Quantum LPG Logistics Ltd

Newgas Cylinder Ltd

Quantum Terminals PLC

Dr. Sawyerr noted that donations to the Fund can be made via Stanbic Bank Ghana Limited (Stanbic Heights Branch, Accra) using the following accounts:

Cheques and bank drafts should be made payable to: CHILDREN SUPPORT FUND 6825. She added that, in the spirit of accountability, a list of donors will be published weekly.

The Fund reflects government’s commitment to ensuring that the sacrifices of the victims are honored through care and protection for their children.

The Fund is expected to continue attracting contributions from individuals, institutions, and organizations committed to supporting the welfare of the bereaved families.

On Wednesday, August 6, 2025, a military helicopter carrying senior government officials including Ghana’s Defence Minister Dr Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister, Murtala Muhammed and six others including three crew members crashed in the Adansi Akrofoum District of the Ashanti Region killing all eight members on board.

The incident drew nationwide grief, with tributes pouring in from government officials, security services, and the public.

A state funeral was held on Friday, August 15, 2025, where the victims were laid to rest. The solemn ceremony was attended by President John Dramani Mahama, senior government officials, members of the security services, traditional leaders, and grieving families.

It was during this funeral that the President announced the creation of the Children’s Support Fund, aimed at securing the future and welfare of the children left behind.
