Black Stars defender Djiku banned in France over sports betting
Ghanaian and Strasbourg defender Alexander Djiku has been slapped with a game ban by the Professional Football League (LFP) in France, a statement has confirmed.
Djiku together with 76 professional players, team officials and coaches were sanctioned after they were found guilty of breaching regulations banning footballers and team officials from taking part in sports betting.
“Meeting on November 16, 23 and 30, 2022 and December 7 and 13, 2022, the Disciplinary Commission decided to sanction players, coaches and leaders of professional clubs who have not respected, for the 2020/2021 season, the ban on sports betting imposed by the Sports Code,” read a statement by the LFP.
“This is the thirteenth file crossing, carried out with the help of ANJ and FDJ, since the 2013/2014 season. These offences are committed even though, together, the LFP and the UNFP conduct awareness or information campaigns with clubs on a daily basis.
“The Commission recalls that the actors in competitions organized by the FFF or the LFP (in particular players, coaches, leaders of professional football clubs) are generally prohibited from betting, online or in physical networks, on all football competitions, whether national or foreign,” the statement.
Alexander Djiku together with Metz’s Amine Bassi and Sacha Delaye of Montpellier will serve a game ban, while other players involved will serve more than a game ban and also financial sanctions.
The game ban means Djiku who was part of Ghana’s squad for the 2022 World Cup played in Qatar and won by Argentina will miss Strasbourg’s game against PSG on the return of the French Ligue One next Wednesday.
