Bawumia In Italy, Set For Talks With Pope Francis
The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia had arrived in Italy for an official visit.
Dr. Bawumia, who is also the NPP flagbearer for the December 7 elections, left Accra on the night of Monday, April 22 for the official visit to Italy and the Vatican.
A statement issued by the Vice President’s Communications Bureau on April 23, 2024 and signed by his spokesperson, Dr. Gideon Boako, said key among his itinerary, the Vice President is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with Pope Francis in the Vatican.
“The Pope’s message of love, mercy and inclusion, which he had devoted himself to promoting unity and mutual understanding between all people, had been embraced around the world. This meeting will highlight our common principles of peace, justice and solidarity to guide us into a better future,” the statement stated.
Religious Tolerance
Pope Francis, the head of the 1.375 billion Catholics, and Dr. Bawumia, a Muslim, have been champions of inter-religious tolerance.
In one of his foreign visits, the Pontiff addressed a gathering of Muslim, Jewish and Orthodox leaders in Azerbaijan’s main mosque in Baku, saying, “These good relations assume great significance for peaceful coexistence and for peace in the world.”
