Bawumia focused on internal reforms to unite NPP ahead of 2028 – Sammi Awuku

Senior Advisor to the Bawumia Campaign Team and Member of Parliament for Akuapem North, Sammi Awuku, has stated that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is focused on deep internal reforms aimed at uniting the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and reclaiming power in the 2028 general elections.
Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday, February 2, 2026, Mr Awuku said the party’s newly elected flagbearer is determined to address key issues that emerged during the party’s presidential primaries and broader internal engagements.
“The focus now is for us to champion some very serious reforms in the party. He, Dr Bawumia, spoke briefly about it in the victory speech. It is how to restore the voting status of our external branches, the issue of proxy voting. He thinks that the decision by the presidential committee was perverse and must not be made to stand going forward,” he said.
Dr. Bawumia was elected flagbearer of the NPP at the party’s presidential primaries held on January 31, 2026, after securing 110,643 votes, representing 56.48 percent of the total valid votes cast. His closest contender, Kennedy Agyapong, placed second with 46,554 votes, representing 23.76 percent, while Dr. Bryan Acheampong came third with 36,303 votes, representing 18.53 percent.
Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum followed in fourth position with 1,999 votes, representing 1.02 percent, with Kwabena Agyei Agyepong placing fifth after polling 402 votes, representing 0.21 percent.
According to Mr Awuku, beyond electoral reforms, Dr. Bawumia is concerned about repositioning the NPP to reconnect with its base and appeal to the broader Ghanaian electorate.
“I also know that he is worried about how the party can put itself together going forward, and make sure that we are in a clear mindset, working towards victory in 2028. The feel and the look of the NPP as it stands today is one of the things that, in private, we have been discussing on how to make the NPP, once again, a party of choice, a party that is loved and respected,” he stated.
He added that the flagbearer is keen on ensuring the party adapts to changing political trends and strengthens its pro-poor credentials.
“Also, how the party responds to the changing trends on the ground, making sure that those below the ladder also feel the NPP is a party that responds to their needs, because of their pro-poor policies,” Mr Awuku noted.
Discipline within the party, he said, is another area Dr. Bawumia considers critical to electoral success. “He is also very firm in the area of discipline. He thinks that a party that is not disciplined cannot win an election,” he said.
Mr Awuku further revealed that Dr. Bawumia intends to engage all stakeholders, including those who feel aggrieved by past party decisions.
“Furthermore, he is determined to help everyone he believes has a role to play. He also wants to engage the people who feel bitter by policies of the party, within the party, or outside the party,” he added.
