Bawku Burns: 3 Students Killed, MP’s Residence Torched, Curfew Extended as Gov’t Vows Crackdown

The Bawku conflict is getting out of control with the government struggling to contain the latest wave of violence, including the killing of three students and the reported arson attack on the residence of Mahama Ayariga, MP for Bawku Central and Majority Leader.

The victims—two students from Nalerigu SHS and one from Bawku SHS—were shot dead by unidentified assailants.

The killings have forced the government to revise its strategy in addressing the long-standing chieftaincy dispute between the Kusasis and Mamprusis.

In a press statement issued on Sunday, July 27, 2025, the presidency warned that the escalating violence threatens to undo previous peacebuilding efforts and demands stronger intervention to safeguard lives and property.

Deployment of soldiers
As a result, the Ghana Armed Forces have been deployed to Bawku and surrounding areas to enforce curfews and restore order.

The government vowed to take all necessary measures to stabilize the region. “The Ghana Armed Forces will act decisively to protect lives and property. This peace enforcement operation is solely aimed at ensuring the safety of all residents, including students,” the statement read.

Otumfuo’s mediation efforts recognised
The government commended His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for his mediation efforts, alongside the Nayiri and Zugraan, which had nearly resolved the conflict before the recent violence. “Otumfuo’s mediation, with the genuine help of the Nayiri and Zugraan, had almost brought finality to the conflict until the very recent killings,” the statement noted.

“This has necessitated drastic actions to protect all in the interests of the greater good,” the statement signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, government spokesperson, added.

Schools closed, curfew extended
Following the fatal shooting of Hakim Kundima, a third-year student at Bawku SHS, the Municipal Education Directorate has temporarily closed the school.

Additionally, the Interior Minister, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has revised curfew hours in Bawku Municipality and nearby communities. Effective July 27, 2025, the new curfew runs from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. daily until further notice.

The adjustment follows recommendations from the Upper East Regional Security Council (REGSEC).

Emergency evacuation of students
The government has initiated an emergency evacuation of students from high-risk areas, including Bawku and Nalerigu, due to escalating ethnic tensions.

Kwakye Ofosu confirmed that a coordinated evacuation is underway to relocate students from vulnerable educational institutions.
