Akwatia by-election: We’re fully ready – IGP

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has assured the Electoral Commission (EC) and the people of Akwatia of the police’s full preparedness ahead of the constituency’s by-election scheduled for Tuesday, September 2, 2025.

The IGP gave the assurance on Monday, September 1, during an inspection of the Collation Centre in Akwatia, where he interacted with the EC’s National Director of Training, Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, and the Eastern Regional EC Director, John Appiah Baffoe.

“We are all with you, and it will be fine. We’re strong on the ground, we’re fully prepared. And we will give you the support,” the IGP assured.

The Akwatia by-election was triggered by the passing of the constituency’s Member of Parliament, Ernest Kumi.

Already, two independent polls have tipped the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Bernard Baidoo Bediako, as the frontrunner in the Akwatia parliamentary by-election.

A survey by Sanity Africa, conducted between August 1 and 27, places Bediako at 52.3%, against 47.7% for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Solomon Asumadu — a slim 4.6-point lead.

Similarly, Global Info Analytics projects Bediako with 53% support, compared to Asumadu’s 47%, reinforcing the NDC candidate’s edge as voters head to the polls.
