Akosombo Dam Spillage: President Akufo-Addo tours flood-ravaged areas today
Less than 24 hours after his arrival from the United States, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, will today, Monday, October 16, 2023, visit districts severely hit by the floods occasioned by the spillage of the Akosombo Dam.
A statement from the Director of Communications at the Presidency, Eugene Arhin on Sunday said the President will be joined on this tour by members of the Inter-Ministerial Committee, which has been set up to coordinate government’s response to the flooding and to help bring relief to those affected.
The President arrived from his four-day official visit to the United States on Sunday evening.
Government efforts
Even before today’s visit of the President, the government had taken some measures to assuage the sufferings of the victims. Officials estimate that bout 25,000 people mostly in the Volta have been affected by the floods.
Relief items
The Volta River Authority (VRA), in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), has presented relief items to communities affected by the spillage.
The items, which included mattresses, blankets, various food items, clothes, and toiletries, were meant to help mitigate the difficulties faced by the communities that have been impacted adversely as a result of the intensified spill rate.
The Authority has also committed to monitor the spill situation of affected communities in the lower Volta basin.
NADMO, GAF aerial tour
Meanwhile, the Director General of NADMO, Eric Nana Agyemang-Prempeh , on Sunday, led a team from the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) headed by the Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Issah Yakubu for an aerial tour of places affected by the spillage.
The team also visited some safe havens at Mepe in the North Tongu District and Akpa in the Central Tongu District where about 6,000 affected victims are being hosted by NADMO and VRA.
The team was accompanied by the CEO of VRA and his deputies.
