Afenyo-Markin sounds warning on extended water shortage in Effutu

The Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has raised concerns over a severe water shortage in the Effutu Municipality, which has left residents without supply for more than two weeks.

In a letter to the Managing Director of Ghana Water Limited and copied to the Minister for Works, Housing, and Water Resources, the Effutu MP described the shutdown as a humanitarian crisis that is taking a toll on every aspect of community life in the municipality.

“This prolonged shutdown has created unbearable hardship for the population of over 140,000, and its effects are being felt across every sector of community life,” he wrote.

He noted that most communities in the Municipality are still without access to potable pipe-borne water, a situation that is severely impacting households, schools, health facilities, and businesses.

“The absence of water supply has thus compounded sanitation challenges, heightened the risk of outbreaks of waterborne diseases, and is threatening the overall socio-economic well-being of the Municipality,” he stressed.

He has, therefore, called on the relevant authorities to provide immediate clarification on the cause of the disruption and, more importantly, to indicate when residents can expect an uninterrupted water supply to be restored.

“I appreciate your prompt attention to this matter and look forward to your swift response,” the letter concluded.
