Lordina Mahama: Strengthen systems to end mother-to-child infections

First Lady Lordina Mahama has emphasised the critical need for comprehensive strategies beyond clinical interventions to achieve the “triple elimination” agenda, targeting mother-to-child transmission of HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis B.

Speaking at the High-Level Meeting of African First Ladies on AIDS, Mrs. Mahama stressed that success in this initiative requires more than medical treatment.

The First Lady highlighted the importance of robust health infrastructure and community-level outreach, particularly in remote areas, as essential components in preventing new infections among mothers and their children.

She urged African governments and partners to prioritise funding and implement inclusive programmes that leave no one behind.

“Achieving the triple elimination agenda… demands more than clinical interventions. It requires consistent and sustained financing to strengthen fragile health systems, effective community engagement that reaches the last mother and child in even the smallest rural village,” she said.
