Ghana’s Mission in the US urges citizens not to overstay amid visa restrictions
Ghana’s Embassy in the United States is urging citizens to strictly adhere to U.S. immigration laws and avoid overstaying their visas, warning that any misuse of the recently reinstated visa privileges could negatively impact the broader Ghanaian community.
Speaking on behalf of Ghana’s Ambassador to the U.S., Victor Emmanuel Smith, Deputy Head of Mission Jane Gasu Aheto issued the caution during the 40th anniversary celebration of the Ga Dangme Association in Washington, D.C.
She announced that U.S. visa restrictions for Ghanaians have been eased, with eligible applicants now able to receive multiple-entry visas valid for up to five years. This marks a significant improvement from the previous policy, which had limited most Ghanaian travelers to single-entry visas valid for just three months.
While welcoming the new policy, Ms. Aheto emphasized the importance of responsible use, urging Ghanaians to respect the terms of their visas.
“After many deliberations, the restrictions on visa for Ghana has been restored and once again Ghanaians can be eligible for up to five years multiple entry visas. While this is very welcome news, it is imperative that we as a people do not abuse the privileges granted to us.
“We must ensure that we abide by the rules governing visas, responsibly, so we do not suffer adverse consequences.”
The Embassy reiterated its commitment to supporting Ghanaians living in the U.S. but underscored that continued compliance with immigration regulations is critical to preserving these renewed visa arrangements.
“The Embassy stands in readiness to offer support and assistance to our fellow Ghanaian brothers and sisters who live and work here, in all their activities.”
The 40th anniversary celebration drew several prominent attendees, including leaders from the Council of Ghanaian Associations (COGA), executives of the Ga Dangme Association, community elders, and invited guests from across the Ghanaian diaspora in the U.S.
The event highlighted the vital role of unity among Ghanaian communities abroad in preserving cultural heritage and contributing to national development.
