Fire at Madina Market devastates stores, no injuries reported

Parts of the Madina Market in Accra were engulfed in flames in the early hours of Friday, September 19, 2025, leaving several shops and wooden structures in ruins.
The fire, which eyewitnesses say broke out around 1:00 a.m., sent thick plumes of smoke into the night sky, drawing anxious traders and residents to the scene. Many watched in despair as their investments went up in flames before the arrival of firefighters.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) confirmed that it received an emergency call at 1:36 a.m. Crews arrived at the market within two minutes, but the intensity of the blaze and the lack of nearby hydrants prompted the deployment of four additional fire engines.
“The fire affected wooden structures, two corn milling shops, and nine containers,” the GNFS noted in a statement. “It was confined at 3:07 a.m., brought under control at 3:19 a.m., and completely extinguished at 4:40 a.m.”
Although property damage was significant, firefighters managed to prevent the flames from spreading to a nearby one-storey warehouse and adjoining buildings. No casualties were reported.
The cause of the fire has not yet been established, but investigations are ongoing.
Assuring the public, the GNFS reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, stressing the need for swift responses and public cooperation during emergencies.
