NDC Shakes As Bawumia Magic Pulls Massive Crowds in Volta Region
Is the NPP going to see a major turnaround in the Volta Region in this year’s elections? It appears the Bawumia magic is working to the advantage of the ruling party as it seeks to make a strong impact in the polls. For now, the seeming inroads being made by the NPP in the Volta Region has sent the main opposition NDC shaking.
Stronghold
The region has been the stronghold of the NDC since 1992, amassing its biggest percentage of votes in every single election.
In the 2016 presidential election, John Mahama had 493,141 votes representing 87.7% while Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo had 60,802 votes representing 10.8%. In the 2020 election, John Mahama had 605,721 votes ( 84.83%) with Nana Akufo-Addo garnering 101,210 votes ( 14.17%).
Campaign
For the few days that he was in the region, Dr Bawumia gave strong indication that he is in for business. Massive crowds unseen of in NPP campaigns in the region came out to meet him, in what is seen as organic support.
Dr Bawumia himself was elated about what he saw and remarked that, from what we had seen, victory is close to the party.
Gen Z support
Many of the thousands that showed support for Dr Bawumia were the youth, who remains a critical part of the electorate. Many of these are Gen Z who are going to vote for the first time. This has given the party hope to appreciate their votes in the region.
Kofi Tontoh, a political aide to Bawumia, who is with the campaign train, was excited about the developments in the Volta region. He said it goes to show that the traditionally NDC stronghold is making a move towards the NPP.
