SPECTACULAR! 1935 Rolls Royce At Otumfuo Osei TuTu II Silver Jubilee; Car Was Used By Agyeman Prempeh II
Asantes have kept true to their customs and traditions, something that has won global recognition.
Treasures of the Kingdom, some of them dating back to antiquity, have been jealously guarded and protected.
One of such treasures is an 89 year-old Rolls Royce which was used by the 14th Asantehene, Otumfuo Sir Osei Agyeman Prempeh II. The antique vehicle has so far been used by three Kings on ceremonial occasions.
Latest appearance
The oldest existing vehicle at the Manhyia Palace made an appearance at the Silver Jubilee coronation anniversary of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II on Sunday, May 12.
One of the highlights of the Adae Kese grand durbar was Otumfuo riding in the vehicle for a traditional activity in the morning at Adum , which preceded the durbar. Crowds lined the roads and cheered the King as his convoy passed through.
Earlier Use
The Rolls Royce was used by Agyeman Prempeh II 89 years ago in 1935 during the Restoration of the Asante Confederacy. In 1949, he rode in the vehicle to open the newly-established Prempeh College.
Subsequent Uses
After the death of Agyeman Prempeh II, his successor, Opoku Ware II, also used the car on some ceremonial occasions. This has been followed by the current Asantehene , Osei Tutu II.
At the 70th Anniversary of Prempeh College, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II rode in the Rolls Royce to the school for the ceremony.
