Covid-19: Ghana Begins Second Vaccination Today
The second phase of the Covid-19 vaccination exercise for eligible members of the Ghanaian public kick starts today.
The exercise which will be carried out selected districts of the Greater Accra, Ashanti and the Central regions will have persons who received their first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine on March 1 to 9 receiving their second dose.
The Ghana Health Service (GHS) announced this at a press briefing on the steps the government has put in place to ensure the effective administration of the second dose of the Covid-19 vaccines nationwide.
According to the Director General, GHS, Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, those who had their first dose from the 1st to 9th March will be those that will be covered adding that the exercise is expected to be completed by Wednesday, May 26.
Dr. Kuma-Aboagye was, however noted that the exercise will be ongoing till the vaccine stock runs out.
“We will just go on until all the 350,000 are vaccinated. And if we are able to get more vaccines immediately, we will continue,” he added.
Earlier this month, Ghana received a total of 350,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine at the Kotoka International Airport in its objective to attain herd immunity.
The second batch of AstraZeneca vaccine forms part of a total of 1.3 million doses being redistributed via the COVAX platform.
So far, 852,047 people across the country have been vaccinated as at May 7. Meanwhile, the country has recorded 1,314 active cases and 783 deaths.
