2 top Alan loyalists join Bawumia campaign; They believe Veep will make a better President than Mahama
Two senior loyalists of Alan Kyerematen have joined the camp of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential race.
The two personalities, Sylvester Tetteh, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Bortianor-Ngleshie Amanfro Constituency in the Greater Accra Region, and Catherine Afeku, a former spokesperson for Mr Kyerematen’s campaign, said they were throwing their weight behind Dr. Bawumia because they believe he would make a good President.
According to them, the December 7, 2024 general election is a must-win for the NPP for which reason there is the need to get presidential candidate who has the capacity to lead the NPP “break the 8”.
Sylvester’s commitment
Sylvester Tetteh who made his announcement on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana show on Tuesday, said he took the decision after consultation with his constituency executives and party elders.
“What I will say this morning is that, the NPP has come a very long way and I think that it’s obvious, from the campaign we’ve waged and what is happening today. I have engaged extensively with my constituency executives, people within and without, and I’m making a firm commitment that we would support Dr. Bawumia for the November 4th elections. And i believe that he would make a better president”.
“Dr. Bawumia is now, of course my candidate, and I think that from the look of things he would make a better president than John Mahama, and I believe that under the circumstances, we should all rally behind Dr. Bawumia for 2024”
Move on
According to the legislator, it is time for supporters of Alan to move on, after the former Minister of Trade and Industry , who was one of the five aspirants to compete in the November 4 National Delegates Congress withdrew from the flag bearer race.
Before taking the decision, Mr Tetteh had indicated that should Mr Kyeremanten decide to support a candidate in the November 4, 2023 election, his followers will not follow him hook, line and sinker. “Alan Kyeremanten respects me because he did not call on me to join his campaign. I joined his campaign because, from where I sit, I see some things and thought it wise to join him. He hasn’t communicated his next move, but if he does and he throws his weight behind any of the candidates, we, his followers, will not just follow suit. We will weigh the pros and cons before we decide whether to follow him or not,” he said.
Catherine decides
For Ms. Who announced her decision on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem on Monday, she reflected and consulted on her next move after Mr. Kyerematen’s withdrawal. “I have to choose a candidate in this election, and I have decided to throw my support, energy, personality, and talent behind Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia. The party must stay in power, and any alternative than Bawumia will be dangerous,” she declared.
