The Premier League club said Mwepu would be at an “extremely high risk of suffering a potentially fatal cardiac event” if he continued playing.

Mwepu had recently fallen ill on a trip with the Zambia national team to Mali. He was unable to train after arriving in West Africa last month and spent four days in hospital.

Mwepu had tests on his return to England and Brighton said the results meant the “only option” was for him to retire.

“These tests have concluded that his illness is due to a hereditary cardiac condition, which manifests later in life and was not previously evident on regular cardiac screening,” Brighton said in a statement.

“Sadly, this can be exacerbated by playing sport so Enock has been advised that the only option, for the sake of his own safety, is for him to stop playing football.”

Mwepu said he was retiring with “sadness”, adding he had lived his dream by reaching the Premier League but that “some dreams come to an end”.

“This is, however, not the end of my involvement in football, I plan to stay involved in some capacity,” he said in a statement on Twitter.

The versatile player joined Brighton from Red Bull Salzburg on a four-year deal for an fee reported to be £18m in July 2021.

He scored three goals in 27 appearances for the club and last played in the 5-2 win over Leicester City in September.

Brighton’s head of medicine and performance Adam Brett said: “It is a terrible blow for Enock, but he has to put his health and his family first and this is the right choice, however difficult it is to quit the game he loves.

“Given this is Enock’s career and a decision which can’t be taken lightly, we have taken our time to be as thorough as possible, completed advanced cardiac investigations and collaborated with clinical experts to gain the best second opinions for Enock.

“We will be helping him make sure the condition is managed with the appropriate treatment for him to otherwise live a long and healthy life.”

Brighton’s Tariq Lamptey out for the season https://thethundergh.com/brightons-tariq-lamptey-out-for-the-season/ https://thethundergh.com/brightons-tariq-lamptey-out-for-the-season/#respond Fri, 12 Mar 2021 17:56:59 +0000 https://thethundergh.com/?p=8301 Brighton right-back Tariq Lamptey will miss the remainder of the season because he requires an operation on his hamstring injury.

The 20-year-old has not played for the Seagulls since being taken off in the goalless draw at Fulham on 16 December.

“We are looking at the surgery which means he will miss the rest of the season,” said Potter.

Lamptey had made 11 league starts this season after establishing himself as a key member of Potter’s side since joining Chelsea in January 2020.

EPL: Brighton stun Liverpool to leave champions seven points off top https://thethundergh.com/epl-brighton-stun-liverpool-to-leave-champions-seven-points-off-top/ https://thethundergh.com/epl-brighton-stun-liverpool-to-leave-champions-seven-points-off-top/#respond Thu, 04 Feb 2021 11:21:46 +0000 https://thethundergh.com/?p=4638 Brighton stunned Liverpool at Anfield to move 10 points clear of the Premier League relegation zone.

Steven Alzate got a fortuitous but deserved winner for Brighton, who are now unbeaten in four league matches, while the Reds’ recent struggles at home continued.

Liverpool, who are seven points behind leaders Manchester City having played a game more, have not won at home since 16 December and have failed to score in three consecutive games at Anfield for the first time since October 1984.

After going 68 games without a league defeat at their home ground, Jurgen Klopp’s side has now also lost back-to-back games there.

Dan Burn should have put the visitors ahead in the first half, only to slice over the crossbar, but it was the defender’s header across goal that set up the winner.

Nathaniel Phillips could only get a toe to it and the ball deflected off Alzate and beyond stand-in Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.

“We fought when we had to – we had to block and defend as a team – but I thought we showed quality when we attacked and courage and bravery with the ball,” said Potter.

“To come here and get the result we have, I think you have got to be close to perfect. I thought we were.

“Fantastic performance. I thought the players were amazing. Such courage, quality, togetherness.”

It lifts Brighton to 15th in the table, while Liverpool slips to fourth after Leicester City’s win at Fulham.
