Voting Underway in Ablekuma North After Violent 2024 Election Suspension

Voting is underway in 19 polling stations across the Ablekuma North constituency in today’s parliamentary re-run. The race pits the NPP’s Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie against the NDC’s Ewuraben Aubynn.
Background
The re-run follows the suspension of the original December 7, 2024, election due to violence and procedural irregularities. The Electoral Commission (EC) halted collation after discovering that results, though approved by party agents, lacked verification from presiding officers—a critical breach of protocol.
Tight race
With 6,863 registered voters eligible to participate, the NPP candidate holds a narrow lead of 48 votes from the December 7 collated results. The re-run proceeded after a court dismissed a petition by Nana Akua Afriyie to halt the polls.
Security assurances
At a Thursday press conference, EC Deputy Chair Dr. Eric Bossman Asare confirmed that the Ghana Police Service and the National Election Security Task Force are deployed to ensure security. Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah ruled out military involvement, stating no troops would be deployed.
EC rejects interference claims
The Commission also denied allegations of external pressure influencing the re-run decision. “Ghana’s Electoral Commission is independent and will not be dictated to by any person or institution. Our track record speaks for itself,” Dr. Asare asserted.
